Snake Stones: Ammonite with Living Chamber

Ammonite
Like their cousin the nautilus, ammonites had a compartmentalized shell.  Most of their body was housed in the largest, longest, and last one known as the living chamber.  It often filled with debris after the animal died, like the shells and limestone “mud” in this example.  Because the living chamber is often damaged or less preserved than the middle of the shell, it is typically trimmed when preparing commercial fossils.

This cut pair ammonite comes from the Mahajanga River Basin, near the village of Ambatolafia, in the Sitampiky commune, in the Boeny region of northwest Madagascar, in the former province of Mahajanga.  They date from the Early Cretaceous period, Albian age (~100 to 113.0 million years ago).

She Said: The Metaphysical Properties of Ammonites

Ammonites WTH are Ammonites?
Ammonites are fossils. Fossils are rocks that used to be critters. The organic matter of the critter has been replaced by the rock so the appearance of the critter is more or less maintained in stone. Fossils are old.  Really old.  OMG old.  If you don’t mind, I’m going to remain vague about the exact age of ammonites because 1) it’s Christopher’s job to get technical 2) some people don’t think the world is that old and I have ZERO interest in having a conversation about how old the Earth is with anyone.  Less than zero, actually.

Ammonites BC
In this instance, “BC” means “Before Chris”.  Christopher is my co-host of the Metaphysical Department.  We have been working together since he began here at Enter the Earth back in 2012.  While we do have a strangely common foundation in the way we have studied energies before we met, we also have our own things.  Fossils were a Chris “thing”, more so than a “me” thing, and he spent way more time dancing with them than I did.  I was kinda like… fossils. Meh.

My understanding of the properties of ammonites “Before Chris” was that they were “Dream Guards”.  In other words, the ammonites that I had worked with seemed specifically useful for protection during sleep. I hadn’t dug much deeper into the energies of ammonites beyond chucking a nice one into my sleep pouch.  Interestingly, that is one of the historical/traditional uses of ammonites.  (Imagine that, my intuition is in alignment with traditional info. Ha.  I love it when that happens.)

Ammonites AC
Chris began working for ETE about the same time that I began to have significant “kundalini misfiring” issues.  Kundalini is the energy said to rise up your spine as part of a personal spiritual evolution process.  Apparently, this process isn’t always a tidy thing.  Doah.  For those of you who are unaware of kundalini misfiring issues, let  me sum it up for you in one simple phrase, “Hurts like a Mo Fo.” We’re talking, “kneeling-on-the-floor-doubled over-while-crying” kind of pain.

Christopher recommended that I work with ammonites to help me release the blockage that was creating the misfiring pain.  Since I’m not a fan of pain as a general rule, I began attuning to and working with some ammonites.  I went many months with an ammonite in my pocket to mitigate the rather brisk pain that I was experiencing and it DID help.  I have to admit, Christopher made a believer out of me.  I am no longer someone who says, “Fossils, meh.”

Chris is still far quicker to grab them for active working sessions, but you know, my memory isn’t as good as it used to be and he will remind me of nifty things I may be forgetting. Yay.

Since that time a couple of years ago, Christopher and I have created ammonite pocket rock sets that were intended to support energy body health and flow, such as in “Kundalini Rising” and “Chakra Aligning & Protection“.

Keeping them in the pockets would be useful, but placing them at the site of suspected blockages would be good too.  Breathe with them and get that stuff moving again. We also integrated ammonites into our energy body support specific grid, called the Chakra Alignment Whirlwind Grid.

This grid is a trip, actually.  We like to set it up on the ground and put a chair over it so that the central vortex of the grid literally interacts with your immediate energy center.  I call that technique a “sit and spin” and it’s very effective when you want to use grid energies as an intense energy healing session.  We had our non-wooey co-workers sit on the chair while we were trying out the combinations and everyone got a sensation of “wind” or whirling motion around the energy field.  It was pretty cool. When I did the sit and spin of that grid I was in the middle of a fair amount of personal crisis and trauma, so …. good golly, it took me ~down~ and did major work.

We’ve used that grid in workshops for emotional alchemy before too… even one that we facilitated at Asheville’s Therapeutic Salt Cave.  Wee haw.  It’s not a party until someone cries!! Christopher will cover all the geological, historical, and traditional information about ammonites when he catches up to my “She Said” articles.  🙂  He’s really quite the smarty pants about rocks.   To see ammonites at our website, click on the photo of the big ass ammonites in crates at the top of this article.

She Said: The Metaphysical Properties of Labradorite & Spectralite

labradoriteLabradorite ranks as one of the stones that is a must have for anyone who uses crystals and gemstones. It has a wide range of uses from daily protection, shielding, energy cleansing, as well as more esoteric uses for spiritual work. spectralite

What About Spectralite?
Spectralite is basically the same stone as labradorite, but it is considered a higher gem quality version of it.  I like to call it “labradorite on steroids”.  The above photo is a good example.  See how it has many colors all swirled in it?  Almost like an oil slick.  Spectralite does come from a different mine than labradorite and very, very little of it is being mined currently.  It is much more cost prohibitive to mine it vs. labradorite.

Too Much is Not Enough…
Anyway, as much as I would like to believe I can be done getting labradorite, I think I may never actually have enough.  I have several personal pieces and I have moved some along to others.  As soon as one gets placed elsewhere, I find myself excited to sort through the labradorite at the store to find another one.  The last one I got was a spectralite pebble that has purple in it. Love the ones with purple. They are actually quite rare.

Pocket Rocks
Labradorite is one of the best “pocket stones” you can use.  The placement of the labradorite in your pocket puts it in the groin placement area commonly used in crystal healing layouts.  “Grounding” stones that are black, gray, brown, and red are the best kinds of stones to put in that pocket/groin position because it is the ~proper chakra placement~ to provide you with the maximum amount of energetic support.

Grounding and Stabilizing
The dark gray part of the rock is actually a little grounding and stabilizing, but not in the same way as smoky quartz or other darker stones.  I feel that the dark color of labradorite creates a type of “modulation” grounding of the higher light energies found in the flash to be more useful and accessible at the physical level.  In other words, it grounds the higher vibrational qualities of itself quite perfectly.

Walk in Both Worlds
It is a prime example of a stone that walks in both the spiritual and physical worlds at the same time.  It’s a lesson for us all to learn. In fact, the ability for labradorite to walk in both worlds is one of the main reasons it makes its way into my pocket when I leave the sacred space of my own home and go out and about in the world.  I’m a sensitive girl and I need strategies to manage the onslaught of energetic information and stimulation found in the world beyond my own walls.

Labradorite fills out my auric field so that my field is stronger and less permeable to the energies of other people, environments, etc.  It is similar to being within an egg of protection, even though it’s not technically “protection” in the way you might consider it.  It is protective and shielding because it makes me stronger and less vulnerable.

When I am energetically comfortable and buffered in this way, I am more able to be open to the world without compromising my own stability, and without having to shut down my sensitivities/empathy that might do some good for a few folks that wander in my direction.  So, basically, labradorite helps me to walk in both worlds at the same time too. If you’d like to see labradorite and spectralite on our website, just click on either of the photos in the article.

She Said: My 5 Favorite Crystal Healing Techniques

I obviously like rocks.  I can feel the “buzz”, which certainly helps in this field. Over the years I have explored many ways to interact with stone energies.  The following techniques are among my favs.

Crystal Grid

1) Crystal Grids:  This would have to be my most favorite way to work with stones.  This is fairly advanced work, but there isn’t anything truly “difficult” about it.  It essentially uses sacred geometry and the process of activating an energy field from stones that are arranged in a type of mandala configuration.

The benefits of this kind of technique is that you can get the energetic effect of a very large specimen with a few or more small pieces.  Also, you can weave together many different energies in a way to create a combination that is supportive of very specific issues.  The activation technique is easy once you learn it and it’s pretty easy to learn it.  Remember doodling daisy flowers when you were a kid?  Yeah, that’s about as hard as the activation technique gets.

The difficulty of this technique is that I usually use 6 stones of each type of stone I want to grid.  Unless you are using rough stones, this can get expensive.  Also, you need some dedicated flat space to get it going.  We have an information and free grid template downloads on the website.  Just click on the photo of the grid above.

pocket rocks

2) Pocket Rocks:  This is really just the process of putting rocks in your front pockets with a little bit of thought about it. The front pocket position is the root chakra position in crystal healing.  The root chakra deals with how you relate to the material/real world.  It is also the energy center that defines how well grounded you are.

Since I am often working with high vibrational issues or energies, I can sometimes feel quite spacie, or what we call, “ungrounded”.  It’s like being on too much cold medicine. If I’m doing active healing work or other wooey specific work, being a space cadet is usually a very good thing.  Wooey specific work (Reiki, energy healing, crystal work, doing readings, praying, etc.) requires me to be connected and aware of non-ordinary states of being.

Otherwise, I sort of need to be able to stay in my body and get shit done.  I co-manage a retail store and a website.  I have quite a few “real world” tasks that I have to accomplish each day, but I also have special needs that can make doing “real world” things harder because I have a tendency to deeply feel all sorts of emotional and energetic information around me.  It’s distracting.  So, one of my favorite fixes for being a space cadet is putting grounding rocks in my front pockets.  I do it almost every day.

The benefits to this technique is that it’s easy.  You don’t need to do anything but shove some rocks in your pockets.  Generally black, brown, red, or metallic stones are the best kinds.

The difficulty is maybe in finding the “just right” size for your pockets, otherwise it looks like you’re happy to see everyone…which just confuses everyone if you are a girl. (Unless you live in Asheville.)

Gem Elixir

3) Gem Elixirs: This is the process of imbuing a fluid with the vibrational energies of a rock, then you usually drink it, bathe in it, spray it on yourself, or whatever.  It’s “buzzy water”.

I don’t use this method every day, but I love it and use it often when I need a lot of energetic intervention.  I also love flower essences and often create combinations of both flower and gem essences.  I really like being able to “drink” in and process energies this way.

The benefits of this technique is that you are almost taking in the vibration like a “medicine”.  It’s a tangibly good way to integrate energy.  You can make a larger blend of several stones, or keep it to single stones.  You buzz up the glass of water you are about to drink down or create a blend that you can preserve and use by the drop.

The difficulties of this technique is that not all rocks are suitable for making elixirs if you put them in direct contact with water.  Some rocks are poisonous and toxic.  It would be a bummer to create an elixir that makes you sick or dead, so don’t do that.  There are non-contact methods you can use to make sure you don’t accidentally poison yourself.

4) Direct Attunement: Umm, this method had to come before any other method, and I consider it ~step 1~ in learning to interact with stones.  It basically means… you hold a rock and ask to attune to it’s energy.

Yep, that’s it.  Hold a rock.  Ask to attune to it.  Then let it rip.  The inclusion of your intention to receive an energetic adjustment so that you are in alignment with the energies of a rock is huge.  Intention is huge.  I usually also include, “so long as it is appropriate and in my highest good”, because…well, it’s just  a good idea.  (I will write an article about “Spiritual CYA” at some point that will explain the processes that I go through to make sure that I’m not wandering willy nilly into energetic and spiritual realities without full oversight.)

The benefit is an immediate shift.  Also, you can wander through a rock shop and literally do a pretty full healing session on yourself.  That’s cool.

The difficulty with this technique is just getting your hands on the rock that is going to shift you in a way that you desire.  That tends to be as hard as just going with your gut.  So, not really that difficult.

Jewelry

5) Wearing Jewelry:  Yeah, this doesn’t need much explanation, does it?  Humans have been into jewelry forever.  I tend to like to wear jewelry in a way that is a bit more intentional, such as pendants that support my heart or throat chakra, earrings that support throat or crown chakra, and anklets that are grounding.

Hands and wrists, via the meridian system, can influence the larger system.  So rings and bracelets can be any stone or color.  I usually keep in mind my receptive side and projective sides.

The benefit of jewelry is that it is beautiful and you can easily hide the fact that you are using stone energy to support yourself in some way.  A lot of people think that is bat shit crazy and would be thrilled to judge you about it.  So, doing it on the down low is nice.  The heart center is often an energy center that needs more support, so a nice pendant hanging there can be very useful and energetically appropriate.

The difficulty of this technique is that jewelry is often expensive.  Not always, of course.  I love elastic stretchy stone bracelets.  Cheap and very useful.  I also like some very affordable stones to hang out by the heart chakra, like rose quartz.  But sometimes, well… my taste is far more fabulous.  There is a multi-colored tourmaline collar necklace at the store that I adore that is about 2K.  It’s dreamy.

Snake Stones: Ammonite with Sutures and Chambers

Split Ammonite with SuturesTwo ammonites, one half, one whole, from the Morondava River Basin, near the town of Sakaraha, in the Atsimo-Andrefana region of southwest Madagascar, in the former province of Tuléar.  They date from the Late Jurassic period, Oxfordian age (~161 to 156 million years ago).  Cut ammonites are uncommon from this area because the interiors are not always well preserved.

The one on the left shows the open chambers of the shell, known more technically as the camerea (Latin, “chamber, room, enclosed space”).  The one on the right shows its sutures (Latin, “stich”), patterns created where the inner folds met the exterior of the shell.  The ammonite  was polished to reveal them.
